So the sight of Anna Friel smoking a cigarette on a photoshoot yesterday was surprising to say the least.

The former Brookside actress, who has permanently relocated to Los Angeles, recently hired a personal trainer in an effort to look the part in image-obsessed California.

Last week she was pictured jogging in the Hollywood suburbs while a personal trainer pushed her daughter along in a pram.

Yet such health awareness was nowhere to be seen yesterday as she took a furtive drag on a cigarette before posing for British Elle in Los Angeles.

Anna arrived at the shoot casually dressed, in a grey top and jeans, and was soon seen having a crafty smoke outside.

Later she emerged dressed in a floral patterned dress, with bright red shoes and artfully applied make-up.

She looked distinctly more glamorous - until she started smoking a cigarette again.

Clearly, the mother-of-two year old Gracie Ellen Mary, whose father is celebrated actor and Harry Potter star David Thewlis, 44, is struggling with some aspects of healthy living.

Anna who made her name in Channel 4 soap Brookside in starring in hit show Pushing Daisies, in which she plays a murdered woman brought back to life by her childhood sweetheart.

She has been so successful in the role, that television bosses have signed her to a six-year contract.

The Rochdale-born star is said to have hired a nanny from Lancashire to ensure that Gracie will have an accent just like her own.

"I know my roots and where I'm from," she has said. "I'm northern and I always will be."
